Despite a five point return from Donal Lenihan St Peter's lost out to St Colmcille's in the Feis Cup

FEIS CUP

St Colmcille's...1-8

St Peter's....0-7

Having drawn with Ratoath in their opening encounter, visitors St Peter's were slow from the traps under the Thursday nights lights in Piltown in this Feis Cup Round 2 encounter.

However, having fallen 0-0 to 1-4 in arrears, Ger Robinson's side hit seven points without reply to regain parity by the break.

All of that counted for nothing however when not only did they fail to register after the resumption, in the midst of their profligacy they squandered at least five good goal opportunities. The best of which - from the returning Seamus Lavin - crashed off Damien Beakey's crossbar.

St Peter's - J Dillon; O Boylan, S Lavin, P Lavin; C Finn, S McEntee (0-1), M Furlong; S Lowndes, C Doran; L Kelly, J Scannell, S Ryan; D Hickey, C Lowndes (0-1), D Lenihan (0-5). CORN NA BOINNE

Navan O’Mahonys...0-16

Nobber ............0-9

Navan O’Mahony’s came out with a seven-point win in the second round of the Corn na Bóinne on Thursday night. It was a cold night but conditions were good for football.

Robbie Keelaghan kept the scoreboard operator busy from the start, opening the scoring within a minute of the throw-in. By the 10-minute mark, Navan O’Mahonys had extended the lead to five points, with scores from Jake Regan, Sean Betson and Keelaghan.

The next 10 minutes saw the town side go eight points clear, with Aodhán Mallon and Conor Finnegan adding their name to the scoresheet.

Aodhan Mallon scored four points for Navan O'Mahonys in their Corn na Boinne win over Nobber.

Twenty-two minutes into the first half, Nobber got their first score of the game with a pointed free, which they followed with a point from play within two minutes. With five minutes to go, Finnegan looked set to find the net with a palmed effort from a Duggie Dillon pass but the Nobber netminder got a touch to the ball to keep the score at 0-9 to 0-5 in favour of O'Mahonys at the break.

Nobber got off to a good start in the second half, scoring two points in quick succession and reducing the gap between the sides.

Navan O’Mahonys stretched ahead again with Mallon, Brian Dillon, Regan and Evan Coffey scoring. Both sides introduced a number of subs, with Navan O’Mahony’s taking advantage of the unlimited subs rule in the competition.

The sides exchanged points in the closing minutes, with Mallon and midfielder Shane Maguire scoring for Damien Moran and Rory Maguire’s charges.

TAILTEANN CUP

Dunderry....0-11

Ballinlough....0-10

Dunderry got the year off on a better note than they finished up on last year with a dug out, but deserving Tailteann Cup win away to Ballilough.

Dunderry opened the scoring after a nice passage of play in which Conor Sheridan found Liam Rattigan who in turn picked out Stephen Coogan who calmly slotted over the first of the evening for the visitors.

This was followed up by a well taken point from Isaac McKeever. The home team pointed from a free before Dunderry took control by scoring four frees from the boot of Coogan. Ballinlough responded from play first then hit twofrees to leave it 0-4 to- 0-6 at half time.

The second half started in similar fashion to the first with Coogan landing his second from play.

Momentum shifted towards the home team with three points from placed balsl and two from play.

Dunderry responded with three frees of their own, two from Coogan and one from Dermot Kelly.

When Ballinlough slotted over a free it was all square until the industrious McKeever marked and then found man of the match Coogan who duly dispensed the winner for Dunderry. Best for Dunderry were Ben Feeney, TJ Loughran, McKeever and Stephen Coogan.

Dunderry - Rónán Brady; T J Loughran, Conor Leavy, Ben Feeney; Simon Carty, Seán Traynor, Jack Connelly; Dan Egenton, Conor Sheridan; William Tracey, Liam Coogan, Dermot Kelly (0-1); Isaac McKeever (0-1), Stephen Coogan (0-9), Liam Rattigan. Subs - Bob Doherty for L Coogan, Donagh Ó Laoire for Connelly, Tomás Gallagher for Loughran, Jack Darcy for Rattigan David Quinn for McKeever, Chris Fitzgerald for Brady.

BALLINLOUGH REPORT

Ballinlough met Dunderry in Round 2 of the Tailteann Cup on Friday evening and it was the visitors who got off the mark quickest, hitting a couple of early wides before finally raising the white flag in the seventh minute and they quickly followed up that score with a second point from play a moment later.

Ballinlough once again were guilty of being wasteful in possession, dropping a number of balls short into the keepers hands, before Harry Ryan eventually got them off the mark with a pointed free, coming in off the post and over the bar in the 11th minute.

Dunderry converted four frees between the 15th and 23rd minute to give themselves a five point lead.

Great work from Benji Smith in the 24th minute set Harry Ryan up for his second point of the game before Colm Mallen closed the gap further with a point two minutes later.

A goal chance for Dunderry in the 27th minute rattled the crossbar but it was Ballinlough who took the last score of the half with a Mark McCullen point in the 31st minute. So when referee Stephen Cregan called for the ball Ballinlough trailed on a scoreline of 0-4 to Dunderry's 0-6.

An early Dunderry point in the second half was cancelled out when Harry Ryan fired over after good link up play with Darren O’Higgins. Another Ryan point this time from the placed ball in the 36th minute reduced the deficit to a single point before Louis Finnegan who was having an excellent game, levelled matters with a tidy point in the 41st minute.

While Ballinlough had plenty of youth on the field it still fell to the tried and trusted men to step up and deliver as Lorcan Maguire pushed the home side in front with a brilliant point from play in the 44th minute.

Good link up play between Alan Gibney and Brandon Brunton saw Harry Ryan add another point to his haul and leave Ballinlough leading by two, but again Dunderry hit another three frees between the 47th and 56th minute to give themselves a one point lead.

A Ballinlough attack in the 58th minute had goal written all over it as Darren O’Higgins collected the ball and bore down on goal only to be fouled on the way through, allowing Harry Ryan to hit the equalising point from close range.

There was plenty of time for either side to grab a winner and it was Dunderry who took the opportunity when an advanced mark was worked short and fired over the bar in the 60th minute.

There was more time still for some late drama when Darren O’Higgins had the ball in the net in the 61st minute only for it to be ruled out for a square ball and shortly thereafter the final whistle sounded, Dunderry taking the win on a scoreline of 0-11 to Ballinlough’s 0-10.

Ballinlough - M Farrelly; J Connell, H Briody, R Farrell; B Smith, D Caffrey, L Finnegan (0-1); H Ryan (0-6), M McCullen (0-1); J Smith, K Óg Lynch, J Casserly; B Brunton, C Mallen (0-1), D O’Higgins. Subs - L Maguire (0-1) for M McCullen, A Gibney for Lynch, B Jordan for Casserly.

TAILTEANN SHIELD

Cortown......2-8

Kilmainhamwood ....2-8

Cortown and Kilmainhamwood played out a thoroughly enjoyable Tailteann Shield draw on a bitterly cold Friday night under the lights in Cortown.

The result boosts both teams chances of advancing to the semi-finals but leaves things finely poised ahead of the final round of action next week.

Playing with the aid of a moderate first half breeze, the Wood were slow out of the blocks evidenced by Oisin Smith's early goal. Ciaran Keating picked out Smith with the corner forward spinning in behind and finishing well from close range.

His older brother Tommy added to the lead with a pointed free shortly after. The visitors opened their account to reduce the arrears to one score but Oisin Smith tapped over a routine free to reestablish the four point buffer.

The Wood gradually found their feet and added a couple of scores in succession to narrow the gap again. Tommy Smith curled over edging towards the break to give Cortown a two-points lead at the interval, 1-3 to 0-4.

The hosts began the second period with greater intensity than their opponents and further scores from Hugh Staunton and Elliot Reilly had Cortown four to the good and again in a seemingly comfortable position.

Kilmainhamwood found their groove just when things seemed to be slipped away from them. A penalty was awarded to the men in blue and white and it was expertly dispatched to bring it back to a one point game.

Niall Bennett equalised from a free but Davy Rispin fired the men in yellow in front again. However, the 1996 Keegan Cup winners looked to have clinched it with a second goal of the night tucked home.

Back came Cortown and a Tommy Smith ball was diverted by Rispin into the path of Mikey Rennicks who calmly slotted under the goalkeeper to tie the sides up once again.

There was still time for late drama as Tommy Smith nosed Cortown in front only for Kilmainhamwood to find a late leveller to draw the sides level once and for all in this see-saw battle.

Both sides may feel they could and should have won it which probably points to a draw being the fairest outcome on the night. Cortown play host to Boardsmill next Thursday with Kilmainhamwood taking on St Mary's who still harbor hopes of advancing themselves.

Cortown - Colm McGearty; Barry Canning, Decky Clarke, Micky Costello; Ciaran Keating, Charlie Smith, Daragh Smith; Stevie Clarke, Luca Brady; Mikey Rennicks (1-0), Hugh Staunton (0-2), Theo Staunton; Oisin Smith (1-1), Tommy Smith (0-3), Elliot Reilly (0-1). Subs - Daragh O'Halloran for S Clarke, Davy Rispin (0-1) for T Staunton, Ivor O'Halloran for Rennicks, John McGearty for Costello.

St Mary’s..... 1-10

Boardsmill .....0-7

Boardsmill made the midweek journey to Donore to take on St Mary's in round two of the Tailteann Shield on a blustery Thursday night.

The hosts started brightest and opened the scoring, before the Mill’ responded through a dead ball from Stevie Gibbons. The home side kicked on for the remainder of the opening half to lead on a scoreline of 1-6 to 0-3. Boardsmill's two other scores came from the boot of Sean Dixon.

The second half was a much tighter affair and both sides registered four points apiece to leave the Donore men with a six-point winning margin. Joey Christie kicked two points, one from either foot, Donal Flattery and Gibbons were the only Boardsmill marksmen for the second period.

Well done to Sean Cribbin, Cillian Purcell and Joey Christie who marked their adult debut last Sunday with their second adult appearance against St Mary’s.
