Navan BMX facility mooted for Navan

Meath County Council is to look at the possibility of providing a BMX facility in Blackwater Park in Navan.

At a meeting of Navan Municipal District Council last week, Cllr Tommy Reilly called on the Council to consider a BMX park in Blackwater Park adjacent to the new bridge over the Blackwater.

"These lands are currently not in use as part of the park but are within the park boundary," he pointed out.

"I have had a lot of young people contact me in relation to providing such a facility."

Cllr Reilly was told that since the original masterplan for Blackwater Park was prepared, the potential uses of the park have evolved. "Therefore, it is proposed to carry out an updated feasibility study for the potential uses of the park to ensure that it is as inclusive as possible. The development of a BMX park can be considered in this context."

Director of Services, Martin Murray said that there was a masterplan for Blackwater Park, but now with work now started on the LDR 4 - the new road linking the RathOldren and Kells Roads - there would be clear boundaries to the park.

"We can revise the masterplan and we will look at a BMX park as part of that," he said.

Construction work on the new road started recently and is expected to take around 18 month to complete.

The road will include a new bridge over the River Blackwater and the route will encroach on Blackwater Park, shaving two hectares off the edge of the amenity and will continue through the site of the old OPW building and emerge at the existing roundabout on the Kells Road.
