Major funding boost for Boyne Valley to Lakelands Greenway

Funding of over €3.1m is to be announced this afternoon for greenway projects in Meath with over €2m to be allocated for the Boyne Valley to Lakelands Greenway.

Construction is nearing completion on the 30km walking and cycling path between Navan and Kingscourt along the route of the old railway line with just 4km left to be completed. To date 24kms are open between Navan and The Poles, Kilmainhamwood with work continuing on the final stretch from there towards Kingscourt.

Cllr Eugene Cassidy has welcomed news of the latest funding of €2.45m for the Boyne Valley to Lakelands Greenway and outlined that the funding is to be used to develop three car parks to serve the greenway at Gibbstown, Nobber and the Poles, Kilmainhamwood, as well as the construction of a footpath linking Kilberry Village to the greenway.

The sections of the greenway in Nobber and Castletown which form part of the local walking loops will also upgraded to a tarmacadam surface.

Meanwhile, funding of €340,000 is also committed for repairs to the boardwalk at Oldbridge on the Boyne Greenway. Louth and East Meath TD Fergus O’Dowd, has welcomed this funding saying: “The Senior Engineer in Meath County Council confirmed to me this morning that this welcome funding has been approved to repair the fire damaged section of the greenway and will also fix the issues highlighted by the structural inspection carried out last June.

“This has been a long time coming since the boardwalk was damaged in 2018, thankfully the Council finally undertook a full inspection last June which highlighted a number of defects on the greenway aside from the obvious damaged section.

Deputy O'Dowd added: “This will no doubt greatly improve people’s experiences on the greenway and follows the wonderful news from earlier this week that €10m of Government investment has been approved for the Oldbridge Visitor centre and site.”
