Assaults which left tourists hospitalised called 'shocking and unacceptable'

The assaults in Dublin city centre which left three tourists hospitalised have been labelled as "deeply shocking and unacceptable" by a Sinn Féin TD.

The men, all aged in their 20s, were assaulted on Fownes Street Upper in Temple Bar just after 10pm on Friday night.

It is understood the men were tourists holidaying in the capital when they were attacked.

Gardaí said they were taken by ambulance to St James's Hospital for treatment.

No arrests have been made and investigations are ongoing, gardaí said.

Sinn Féin TD Louise O’Reilly described the incident in Temple Bar as “deeply shocking and totally unacceptable”.

“My thoughts are with the three people receiving hospital treatment for their injuries and I wish them a speedy recovery,” she said.

“Dubliners, those who call this city home, tourists and Gardaí, all deserve to be safe in our capital city.”

Ms O’Reilly said her party has outlined proposals to tackle crime in Dublin.

“A sticking-plaster approach to policing our capital city will not cut it – we need real reform to keep communities safe,” she said.

The incident comes after an American tourist was seriously assaulted and left with life-changing injuries last month in Dublin.

An Garda Síochána has been keen to show high visibility in the city centre since the assault. A new policing plan for the capital is to include increased use of search powers, as well as ensuring greater visibility of gardaí.
