An eggscellent discovery for Boardsmill family

The Guy family from Boardsmill got an eggcellent surprise last week when they returned from a weekend away to find their hen had laid a massive egg more than double the size of a normal one!

Seán and Conor Guy went out to check on their chickens when they arrived home and were left speechless at the discovery.

The youngster's whopper of an egg which was laid by a Rhode Island Red called Sarah weighs in at an enormous 117g while ones purchased in the supermarket usually weigh between 50g and 60g.

"We were in Donegal for the weekend and when we came back Sean went out to check the eggs and he came running in with a bucket of eggs and shouted get the weighing scales I want to weigh this egg," said mum Barbara. "So he weighed it and it was 117g on the button, it's huge!" she added.

"They usually lay big eggs but nothing like this!

"It's pride of place in the kitchen and every visitor is being shown the prize egg!" said Barbara.

In March the same breed of hen in Wicklow laid what is believed to be Ireland’s largest egg, the equivalant in size to the Guy family's egg.
