Appetite growing for campaign to establish community allotments in Navan

A campaign to set up community allotments in Navan has been launched.

There was great interest at the first meeting which was hosted by the Mayor of Navan, Cllr Eddie Fennessy.

"Our first meeting went well. There's a lot of enthusiasm and good will out there towards such a project and we'll need to tap into that over the coming months to strengthen our case for an allotment in Navan," he said.

"I pay particular thanks to Ollie Carroll for agreeing to chair the group. He's got a lot of experience in working such facilities. His guidance will prove crucial to the success of the project.

"Representatives from the disability services and the Women's Shed have also gotten involved which is great news for the local community," the mayor stated.

"Exciting times lie ahead. Anyone with an interest in helping to develop the allotment is more than welcome to join our group. We need as much help as we can get and your assistance would be greatly appreciated."

"The aim is to drive a campaign to deliver a community allotment in Navan. A well managed facility could provide space for local disability service providers, schools, youth clubs, age friendly groups and people of all hues and persuasions to enjoy the open air and the value of not only developing the land, but growing their communities as well."

Meanwhile, the Kells Community Allotments have been running for the past 12 years with a huge uptake by young and old alike. The allotments are located on all two acres of agricultural land at Loyd provided by Meath County Council. In Athboy, the local Tidy Towns group runs the allotments, leasing the land from Meath County Council to provide the community with an area to grow their own food and produce.
