Ciaran Flynn

Flynn to be appointed new Meath GAA secretary

There will only be three contests for positions on the Co Board at this year's Meath GAA Convention with eight of the 11 roles expected to be filled unopposed when club delegates gather for the annual meeting at Navan O'Mahonys on Monday 12th December, 7pm.

With Mairead Delaney's five-year term as secretary coming to an end, Dunsany's Ciaran Flynn is the sole nomination to replace the Dunshaughlin woman, while the other major change at the top table will see Jim Mullery drop down to assistant-treasurer with Gene Smith from Nobber stepping up from that position to take on the treasurer's job.

Chairman John Kavanagh will be returned unopposed, but his vice-chair Paddy Kelly is set to face a challenge from Nobber's Dudley Farrell for the role.

The outgoing assistant-secretary Brian Kelly has opted to step away from that position to take over from Flynn as PRO, so Kildalkey's Nick Fitzgerald is nominated unopposed to take over as assistant to Flynn.

As well as the contest for vice-chairman, the two other votes on the night will see the outgoing pair of Damien Griffin and Cathal Seoighe challenged by Delaney for the two Leinster Council positions, while the one Central Council delegate role will be between the outgoing Jason Plunkett and former chairman Conor Tormey.

Nominations: Chairman - John Kavanagh (St Ultan's) outgoing; secretary - Ciarán Flynn (Dunsany); treasurer - Gene Smith (Nobber); vice-chairman - Paddy Kelly (Kiltale) outgoing, Dudley Farrell (Nobber); assistant-secretary - Nick Fitzgerald (Kildalkey); assistant-treasurer - Jim Mullery (Slane); coaching officer - Martin Blake (St Brigid's) outgoing; Irish Cultural officer - Joseph O'Brien (Skryne) outgoing; PRO - Brian Kelly (Seneschalstown); Leinster Council rep - Damien Griffin (Na Fianna) outgoing, Cathal Seoighe (Clann na nGael) outgoing, Mairéad Delaney (Dunshaughlin); Central Council rep - Jason Plunkett (Clonard) outgoing, Conor Tormey (Donaghmore/Ashbourne).
