Works under way to preserve 15th century Nobber bell tower

Works to preserve the medieval belfry tower in Nobber are well under way to remove the ivy and repoint the stone.

Funding was announced earlier this year under the Community Monument Fund for 2022 for the project and the works to conserve the 15th century tower are being carried out by Rocks Road Stone. The bottom half of the tower is being stripped of ivy and repointed this year, with the top half to be completed next year.

Nobber Heritage Centre has welcomed the commencement of works on its Facebook page. "The committee have campaigned long and hard for the preservation of the tower so it is great to see the work commence. Scaffolding is going up at present, and any headstones in the immediate vicinity of the tower have been covered with protective hoarding.

"The 'ribbon' draped over the tower is an attempt to keep the crows away. The cemetery is still open and accessible but access around the tower and the George Eogan Centre will be restricted for the duration of the works."

St John's Old Cemetery Restoration Group has been strongly advocating for these repairs for a number of years and a structural survey last year highlighted the need for urgent repairs to be undertaken to protect the tower. On foot of this, the Heritage Deptartment of Meath County Council applied to the Community Monuments Fund, which was successful with funding of €85,000 awarded.
