Safety works to start at Skryne junction

Long campaigned for safety works at Oberstown Cross in Skyrne that residents hope will end the frequent accidents and near misses that occur at the junction, are expected to start this week.

Just recently the Meath Chronicle highlighted two collisions in the space of a week inclduing one where a van and a car collided, which once again prompted calls for long-promised works at the cross to be expedited.

Local resident and Sinn Féin Meat East TD Darren O'Rourke said at the time that it was a “minor miracle that there hasn't been a fatality there” and vented his frustration the slow pace of progressing agreed works at the junction.

In correspondence to Deputy O'Rourke and Meath East TD Thomas Byrne, Meath County Council confirmed that it had met with the contractor on site last Thursday morning and it was expected that work would commence this week.

The programme of works include minor pavement (road) repairs, tree and hedge-cutting work, new public lighting ducting, new public lighting columns and LED lanterns, new kerbing, new bollards and maintenance on existing bollards, new ramp signage, renewal of road marking, ESB energising the public lighting and speed ramps at the approach to the junction. However, the lighting must be connected before the ramps can be installed.
