Triumphant Trim takes Tidy Towns title

Trim Tidy Town volunteers are celebrating after Trim was named Ireland's Tidiest Town at a ceremony in Dublin this morning.

Trim has been in the shake-up at the top of the table for the past number of years and the volunteers and Meath County Council were thrilled to see all their hard efforts rewarded with the national title, when the announcement was made by Community and Rural Development Minister Heather Humphreys at the RDS.

It is the fourth time that Trim has scooped the top title since the competition began in 1958. Their last title was in 1984, while the only other Meath winner was Moynalty in 2013.

An Cathaoirleach of Meath County Council, Councillor Nick Killian together with An Cathaoirleach of Trim MD, Councillor Joe Fox would like to offer their huge congratulations to Trim Tidy Towns and the people of Trim on winning this year’s SuperValu Tidy Towns competition. This is the 4th time that Trim has received this honour having previously held the title in 1972 and 1984 and they were joint winners in 1974.

An Cathaoirleach Councillor Nick Killian commented “It’s a wonderful achievement for Trim Tidy Towns and the wider Trim community. This has been a whole-of-community effort with the support of volunteers, the business community and residents’ associations all supporting the efforts to secure this national honour. I also want to thank the staff of Meath County Council who have played their part in achieving this result.”

An Cathaoirleach of Trim MD, Councillor Joe Fox commented “this is absolutely wonderful news for Trim. This result is a compilation of years of immense work undertaken by Trim Tidy Towns, Meath County Council and the wider Trim community. Trim is a town that is renowned for its history and heritage, and it is now rightly recognised as a town with commitment to cleanliness, tidiness and environmental sustainability. It is fitting that this award comes on the eve of our celebrations of the Púca Festival and we invite you all to come to Trim to celebrate with us over this Halloween weekend.”

The Tidy Towns Adjudicators commended the community of Trim on their hard work in improving the heritage and appearance of the town and in particular the two projects Trim Educate Together and (SEC) Sustainable Energy Committee.

Echoing the congratulations of Councillors Nick Killian and Joe Fox, the Chief Executive of Meath County Council, Jackie Maguire, said that "Trim was well-deserving of this national honour”, she paid tribute to Trim Tidy Towns Committee and thanked the staff of Trim MD for all of their efforts in assisting the Tidy Towns Committee and who have contributed in a very meaningful way. She also paid tribute to all of the Tidy Towns Groups in Co Meath for their ongoing efforts in improving their local communities.

Meath West TD Damien English also offered his congratulations: “This is a huge result for Trim and for County Meath. Congratulations on this magnificent achievement by Trim Tidy Towns and the entire community in Trim. Thanks to the work and effort by their Chairman Brian Heffernan, the hard working committee, the many dedicated volunteers, the local residents and businesses in Trim along with Meath County Council who made their town the tidiest town in Ireland. The people of Trim will be rightly celebrating this incredible victory - a super achievement for all involved”.
