Supporting the Girls in Green on a night never to be forgotten

There was no shortage of Irish support at Hampden Park last week as Vera Pauw's Republic of Ireland side defeated Scotland 1-0.

Among those supporting the Irish team were a group of supporters from Meath including Laura Matthews, Katie Melady, Luke Melady, Louise Hayes, Daina Grayand Alex Hayes.

They had plenty to cheer about too as Courtney Brosnan saved a penalty before Amber Barrett scored the only goal of the game to give the Irish the precious 1-0 victory they needed.

In an unforgettable, emotional moment Barrett kissed the black armband she was wearing in tribute to the ten people who died following the explosion in Creeslough just four days earlier.

Now the Republic of Ireland can start preparing for their first ever World Cup finals in New Zealand and Australia next summer.

Will there be many supporters from Meath going to the finals? We will have to wait and see but those who were at Hampden Park will always remember the night history was made in Irish soccer.

At least one group of Irish supporters from the Royal County can always say - "We were there supporting the Girls in Green all the way."
