Young Bettystown dad killed by train to be laid to rest this week

The funeral of a young Bettystown man who died after he was struck by a train near Gormanston last week is to take place on Thursday.

Twenty-two year-old father of one, Jonathan (Johnny) Hughes Flanagan, who was living in Balbriggan, died following the tragic accident last Wednesday evening.

It is believed Jonathan and his friend were taking a shortcut via the tracks when a Dublin to Belfast train collided with them. Mr Flanagan was treated at the scene by emergency services but was later pronounced dead.

His remains were taken to the mortuary in Navan Hospital where a post mortem took place.

Mr Flanagan's friend received treatment for his injuries at the scene.

The incident happened on the main Belfast-Dublin line shortly before 9.30pm on Wednesday night, just outside Gormanston railway station.

Jonathan was from a well known Bettystown family, who operated post offices in the village and Skerries.

He will be reposing at Lannon's funeral home on Thursday from 5pm to 8pm with removal Friday to St Patrick's church Skerries for 12 noon funeral Mass and burial afterwards in Ardla cemetery, Skerries.

Jonathan is survived by his parents, Ann and John; daughter Macie; sister, Raeann; brothers, Jai and Luke; step parents, Lorraine and John, grandmothers, extended family and many friends.
