Meath players claim silverware in Toronto

Two footballers from Meath had a day to remember when they helped Toronto Gaels to win the Toronto GAA SFC last weekend.

Chris Lynch from Longwood and Joseph Moore from Seneschalstown played their part in engineering the notable triumph.

"The win was huge for the Toronto Gaels making it their first win since 1994 and first final appearance since 2014," commented club vice chairman Adam Kiernan.

The Toronto Gaels defeated Durham Robert Emmets 1-14 to 1-09 in the final.

Former Meath captain Tommy Dowd and his wife Geraldine also recently visited Toronto and called into see GAA connections in the area, many of them from Meath.

Dowd, who captained Meath to an All-Ireland triumph in 1996, was hosted in Toronto by fellow Meath man Bennie Smith who was featured in the Meath Chronicle two years ago.

Bennie, from Cortown, has spent more than 50 years in Canada. He spent most of his working life as a Canadian police officer much of it spent patrolling the streets of Cabbagetown, an area in the city where Irish people fleeing from the Famine once lived . They grew cabbage in their front gardens thus giving the area its name.

These days Cabbagetown is mainly populated by affluent professionals who have spent considerable fortunes restoring the area's beautiful Victorian houses. It's a desirable place to live where house prices, even in the context of Ireland, can be eye watering.

A proud Meath man Bennie is long serving member of the St. Vincent's Club in Toronto.
