Dunderry triumph on TG4’s Go Gasta!

Dunderry claimed top prize in the TG4 2022 National Go Gasta Championship.

Go Gasta, which is hosted by TG4 sees three men and three women from two rival GAA clubs compete in an obstacle course race, with the course taking them from one club to the other.

Dunderry bet Wolfe Tones in the county round before progressing to the final where they squared off against Doonbeg from Clare.

Dunderry captain Donagh O’Laoire spoke of the experience.

“We beat Wolfe Tones in March. For the first course we ran from Dunderry over towards Bohermeen, doing obstacles at different points along the way. We got a bus to the Silver Tankard. Then we ran from there Donaghpatrick church where we did more challenges before running to Gibbstown pitch. They ran the opposite direction that morning, but we were able to do it quicker.”

Eighteen different clubs from across the county competed in the group stage with the fastest two progressing to the final.

All of the teams from several different counties completed a course of the same distance, this was all timed and the best two counties went into the final.

"In the final in Punchestown the teams had to climb over walls, crawl under nets, hit a sliotar into a bucket, knock bowling pins off a wall, walk across a plank and guide a loop around a wire”, said Donagh. “In the end we won four and lost two challenges.

It was one of the hottest days I’ve ever had to compete in, I had played half of a football game that morning so I was really under pressure. It was a great achievement and we’re all very proud to have won it for the club."
