Cllrs’ frustration at lack of action on derelict school

Just days before a fire broke out in the Old St Mary's School in Trim, Cllr Trevor Golden had vented his frustation that the building has been left sitting there by the Department of Education and said Meath County Council should serve notice on it.

At the July meeting of Trim Municipal District Council, Cllr Golden said the building is derelict and the council should serve notice on it.

"The responses we have been getting from the Department, I don't think any of us are happy. The buildng is derelict. I think we should write again and come our September meeting, if we haven't got a satisfactory response, we should go down that road. They will have had the summer to respond."

It was agreed to write again and Director of Services Des Foley said they would seek an update and circulate it to councillors when it is received.

St Mary's Convent School has been vacant for 12 years and with each year that passes, is falling into further disrepair and has been targeted by vandals several times. It has also been noted on Tidy Towns reports.

At one point the building was earmarked for Trim Educate Together and since then the Department has not given any indication of what its intention is.
