Ashbourne latest town to roll out WIFI4EU network

Over 1,000 users in Ashbourne have benefitted from the new WIFI4EU network which rolled out in the town centre over the last few months, according to Meath County Council.

Cathaoirleach Cllr Sean Drew and cathaoirleach of Ashbourne Municipal District, Cllr Suzanne Jamal, along with Cllr Conor Tormey and Cllr Amanda Smith formally launched Ashbourne WIFI4EU last week.

The network sees the total number of towns providing WIFI in Meath to four with more locations to be launched in the coming weeks.

Cllr Drew welcomed the delivery of the network in Ashbourne saying: "It is important that as many of our citizens as possible have access to broadband. I am glad to see that the county’s second largest town is now included along with Kells and Navan who were launched last year and recently added Oldcastle." He added "I’d particularly like to thank the Department of Rural & Community Development for providing match funding to enable the delivery of greater coverage across the county."

The WIFI4EU programme sees the investment of over €120 million across the European Union to see the introduction of freely accessible high speed across centres of human life.

Cllr Jamal noted the support from traders in the town. "There has been a great deal of interest in delivering the network in Ashbourne from the traders with several businesses expressing an interest in hosting the access points to provide coverage. I’m glad to see that the council has also provided coverage at the amphitheatre in the playground."

Cllr Tormey, who is a partner in DNG Tormey Lee Auctioneers, welcomed the delivery of services in Ashbourne commenting: "We are glad to be able to help deliver this project for the people of Ashbourne. Businesses like the Fox’s Den and The Cinnamon Garden show the fantastic community spirit in Ashbourne supporting residents and visitors to the town."
