The area around The Bull at Navan’s Market Square needs to be maintained properly, councillors have agreed.

Cllrs say extra measures required to sort littering and parking problems at the Bull

Problem of delivery drivers on double yellow lines

A CALL on Meath County Council to install measures to deter anti-social behaviour and the dumping of litter and cigarette butts at the Bull sculpture at Market Square in Navan has been made by Cllr Emer Tóibín.

She called on the council to carry out a review of the area so that it can be transformed into a more welcoming focal point for young and old in the town.

“I am not looking for a big overhaul, but it is not as good as it could be," she said.

“It is an historic area and should be a focal point for the town. It looks dirty and grubby and would be lovely if it was cleaned up. I am not looking for massive money to be spent on it but some imaginative way of making it more inviting.”

Cllr Tommy Reilly said it was a focal point and should be kept in pristine condition.

“If the litter warden started issuing fines down there, it would get cleaned up fairly quickly,” he said.

Cllr Yemi Adenuga outlined the need for focused cleaning in the area.

Cllr Padraig Fitzsimons pointed out that hundreds of young people congregate there on Saturday nights.

Cllr Tóibín was told Market Square is currently serviced with adequate bins and Meath County Council has invested recently in new cleaning equipment for the cigarette butts issue. A cleaning of this particular area is planned in the coming weeks.

As part of Navan 2030, there are plans for new public lighting, zebra crossings and paving around Market Square, which should all add to the attractiveness of the area.

Cllr Eddie Fennessy raised the issue of food delivery drivers parking at the bull on weekend evenings.

“Bus drivers aren't able to get around them,” he said.

Cllr Alan Lawes agreed recalling that he had been travelling behind a bus that couldn't get round.
