Peggy shows the necessary power to land World title

Four lifters from Ireland travelled to Maromme in Normandy last weekend to compete in the World Drug Free Powerlifting Federation Single Lifts World Championships - and they all came back World champions.

Among the winners were Peggy Biala, who trains out of DROC Strength and Conditioning gym on Kennedy Road in Navan.

Peggy only started competing in powerlifting this year and qualified for the World Championships by winning Irish nationals in Crossmaglen in March where she also set an Irish national record with a 118kg squat.

She competed in both squat and deadlift, in the M1 (age 40 - 44), 90kg+ category winning both in her age and weight class and winning the deadlift open age class with a 160kg deadlift.

Peggy also attempted to set new world record in squat and deadlift and narrowly missed both.

Other Irish lifters Alba Byrne and James Van Coppenhagen from Dublin were also named world deadlift champions with 145kg and 255kg lifts respectively. Chris Harrison from Kildare competed in all three disciplines (squat, bench press and deadlift) winning three world titles in the 110kg men's category.
