Cheltenham superstar, Flooring Porter, takes pride of place at Rathfeigh school

Many legends, from poets to Gaelic footballers, have passed through the gates of Rathfeigh National School down through the years, but on Wednesday, a legend of the equine variety, Flooring Porter, made a visit.

His second consecutive victory in the Stayers’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham festival has put him on a pedestal not just in Rathfeigh and Skryne but amongst the racing fraternity throughout Ireland and Britain.

Wednesday was a day of great excitement for the children in Rathfeigh as Flooring Porter was paraded around the school yard to the delight and amazement of everyone in attendance. It was a real family occasion at the school as trainer and school parents Gavin and Kiva Cromwell and their three children Jake, Sophie and Camron as well as the horse’s groom, Seneschalstown and Meath footballer Caragh Monaghan, arrived. Jake was attired in the silks worn by jockey Danny Mullins at Cheltenham and maybe one day he’ll be riding horses professionally for his dad!

Principal Seamus Tansley said: "The smiles from everyone connected with the horse was a joy to see and we, in Rathfeigh NS, were privileged to be present for this special occasion. We thank Gavin, any everyone connected with Flooring Porter, for giving of their time to visit the school. We wish Gavin the best of luck in his future endeavours with the horse and hopefully there will be more great days ahead."
