United players do club proud in protracted cup run

This week Torro Utd players can reflect back on a wonderful adventure in the SFAI u-14 Cup when they overcame a number of considerable challenges along the way before eventually losing out in the last 16 of the competition.

The Torro youngsters defeated a number of teams, including Parkvilla, as they progressed through round after round with their journey ending last weekend when they lost out 0-2 to slick Limerick side Holycross.

Despite the long journey down to the south-west Torro made a bright start to the game and they carved out an early chance when Korede Otubanjo threaded a ball through for Oisin Smyth.

He skilfully side-steppd the Holycross goalkeeper but was, in the view of the visitors, taken down but no penalty was given.

Holycross took the lead with an excellent delivery from a corner with a flick on helping the ball to the net.

The Limerick side found the net again in a similar fashion before half-time only this time the ball went straight into the net. Torro came out for the second-half and completely dominated matters with numerous chances but couldn’t get a goal back.

However, showing the determination and resilience that had brought them far in the competition they never gave up, battling on to the final whistle.

Holycross's skilful delivery from corners and set-pieces was the difference between sides on what was a great adventure for a group of young players from Torro Utd who can truly say they did their club proud.

It was also a memorable run for mentors involved including Nigel Smyth , Alan Oakes, Eoghan Moore , Fiachra Lynch and Sean Power.
