Broadband Blackspots: ‘It’s very frustrating when customers are waiting on information’

KILBERRY

Although Kilberry is just a few miles outside Navan and is on the main Navan to Kingscourt Road, it is yet another blackspot in the county where high speed broadband has not yet been rolled out.

There are a number of businesses in the area who are employing a lot of people but there is still no sign of fibre broadband reaching the area.

Ian Timmons, Managing Director of Meath Farm Machinery described the situation as a "nightmare" at times.

"It is very slow at times. It is a nightmare at times to be honest. We employ 44 people between both our businesses and there are 30 in Kilberry. We have fixed line broadband, it is very slow. It gets the job done but it slows everything up. It can be quite frustrating when you have customers on front of you waiting for information".

Ian said they don’t' know when high speed broadband will be rolled out to them but feels the Kilberry area should be a priority given the number of businesses in the area, and the amount of people being employed.

Joe Conway of Conway’s Service Station said while there is fibre broadband further down the road, it doesn't come as far as them.

"I live in a more rural area near Kingscourt and we have fibre broadband. Navan is a big town, I don't understand it."

He told how they had to change bank machines as they had been previously relying on WiFi only and they had regular problems and they now have machines that also have a SIM.

"It can still be intermittent. At times it can be fast but then at busy periods, like in the evenings it slows down."

He was they often have customers waiting longer than they should have to while they wait for the transaction to go through.

Another resident Bernie Halleran said she has fixed line broadband but said it is "more like dial up" at times.

"It was horrendous at one point, so I just got rid of it. We had no broadband in the house at all at one point but then the children needed it for school.

"We are in a blackspot. It baffles me at times when you look at where we are. We are not that far from the town and we are on a main road.

"I don't know how businesses in the area are managing."

When there are too many using it, it drops right down.
