Cllr calls for safety improvements at dangerous Casey’s Cross junction

The speed and sheer volume of traffic on the Kentstown Road at Casey's Cross outside Navan makes for a very dangerous junction, Cllr Alan Lawes told a meeting of Navan Municipal Council last week.

He had called on Meath County Council to carry out a road safety survey at the cross.

“Local residents have raised concerns about safety with me. It has become very dangerous with speeding cars and the volume of traffic,” he said.

He was told Meath County Council had conducted a traffic count and survey of the R153 near to the location of Casey’s Cross in 2019 and a new request has been sent to the Transportation Technical Team to arrange a full road safety audit to be completed when the counters and staff are available. Cllr Lawes was told that because of the large number of requests the Council couldn't confirm when this would be carried out, but it was likely be at some stage in the first quarter of the new year.

Meanwhile, Cllr Padraig Fitzsimons proposed the installation of traffic calming measures on Swan Lane, Navan, specifically in the area from the Balreask School to the entrance to Old Balreask Woods/Oakleigh, so as to increase safety for pedestrians. He was told the council would carry out a survey to ascertain the extent of speeding and assess driver behaviour in the area. Following the survey, any traffic management measures deemed necessary by the Transportation Section would be put forward for consideration.
