Fergal Lynch takes the helm at the Chronicle sports desk

Fergal Lynch is the new sports editor of Meath Chronicle

The 48-year-old Trim native has been a sports reporter with the paper for over 20 years and succeeds Conall Collier who gave over 30 years stoic service steering the Meath Chronicle’s sports coverage.

Father-of-two Fergal joined the Meath Chronicle in 1997 and described his appointment as an “absolute honour” and that he was looking forward to taking on the ever-changing challenge of the local media game.

"There have been very few sports editors in the history of the Meath Chronicle and I'm blessed to be only the fourth person in the last 50 years, at least, to fill that role.

"Those that have gone before me have built, in my opinion, the finest local sports pages in the country and in my 24 years as a sports journalist with the Meath Chronicle I was lucky to work under sports editor Conall Collier.

"Paul Clarke was another major influence on me in my early days as a cub reporter and the name Tex Mooney as one of the finest sports editors in the country still holds a lot of gravitas around our office.

"Journalism is changing across the world over and we are no different here in the Meath Chronicle. When I started out in 1997 it was a pen and paper job along a sideline and then back to a computer to type up a report.

"With the ever-evolving world of social media we have had to adapt, and we will continue to move with, and be ahead of, the times as best we can to bring the Meath public the very best of up-to-the-minute local sports coverage.

"Now, more than ever, our local newspaper is a vital tool in our society. From a sporting point of view, the Meath Chronicle is the paper of record in the county and a valuable resource for research and accountability.

"It is my aim to continue to drive the Meath Chronicle sports department forward and maintain the outstanding work of my predecessor Conall Collier," he said.

Meath Chronicle editor Gavan Becton said he was delighted with the appointment of Fergal to the position of sports editor and that the tradition of top class coverage would be in safe hands.

"Fergal's depth of knowledge for the sporting scene in Meath is matched only by his passion for his craft and we know he, along with colleague Jimmy Geoghegan, will do a terrific job of charting our sports coverage across all platforms going forward.

“I also want to pay tribute to Fergal’s predecessor Conall Collier who has been a force of nature here at the Meath Chronicle for over 30 years and has left an indelible mark on the standard of sports coverage in Meath."
