Kiltale marksman to stay with tried and trusted routine

Kiltale's Jack Regan will not be doing anything different for Sunday's SHC final at Pairc Tailteann against old rivals Kildalkey. Certainly nothing different than any other do or die championship game.

He'll be going to his parents house for breakfast as he usually does on big-match day and taking it from there.

"We won't be doing anything differently, Brian (Gilsenan) knows all about how to approach finals, he's been involved in a few. The Kildalkey management team of Pat O'Halloran and Daire Lahart will also know all about finals, so there's no difference there.

"In fact there is not much difference between the teams and it will probably come down to whoever works harder on the day."

As part of his pre-match routine Regan is likely to get in plenty of practice in free-taking simply because that's what he does extremely well.

The 26-year-old electrician has emerged as a powerful force for Kiltale again this year helping them recover from an first-round defeat to Na Fianna to earn a place in the final.

His contribution from frees and '65s' as well as open play have been major factors in his club's progress.

His free-taking has been exemplary, helping him to rack up big scores in each game, that's hardly surprising considering he practices the skill just about everyday at Kiltale's home ground.

"We train from about eight on but the lights would be on from about 7.20 and there would be usually a good few boys around after training so I would clip over a few frees even then.

"When we're not training the minors would be there, they're still involved in their championship. The lights would be on most evenings so you just tip away."

Regan will, he reckons be playing in ninth final on Sunday (a stat that included a replay against Kildalkey in 2019). A replay his team lost.

Making up for that painful setback is, no doubt, one of the forces driving his team on. Regan is prepared for a hard battle.

It has always been so when Kildalkey are the opponents.
