League chief makes a call to arms as crisis looms

The general secretary of the North East Football League Gerry Gorman says the local soccer league is facing into its biggest crisis in its history.

The NEFL chief, who is widely respected in soccer circles for what he has done for the game in the north-east, says a number "vital administrative roles" are about to become vacant.

He adds that unless people are willing to step forward and fill these roles the local league is facing a full-blown storm.

"At our forthcoming AGM, scheduled for early February 2022, the NEFL face the greatest challenge in our history to fill some vital administrative roles which shall be vacant resulting from declarations of intent from a number of present officers," he outlined today.

He is asking people to stop forward or at least suggest someone who could be suitable for the roles.

"All clubs, or indeed anyone with an interest of football development at large in the North East area, are requested to source out suitable candidates, or as an alternative put your own name forward for consideration."

The NEFL general secretary has outlined how a number of highly experienced officials have indicated they will not be going forward for re-election.

"The following long term holders of various roles will not be seeking re-election. In some instances they have indicated their willingness to help out in different roles, if elected.

"Chairman David Tully might be available for bit part role on Commitee. Cannot commit his time during summer months

"Fixtures secretary Declan Jordan may consider taking on General Secretary position if proposed, but will be available for committee if not.

Registrar Damien Smith is retiring from Committee after four years diligent service as registrar (plus two previous to that on Committee) in what has become a very demanding position due to the nature of the FAI.net system which is imposed upon all leagues and has not delivered on what it was supposed to be geared for.

"Committee members Brian McCreary and Stephen McCabe are both retiring after a number of years service with great commitment assisting the running of the league to expected standards."

As well as general secretary Gorman looks after the duties of league treasurer and MDL site manager. He is willing to continue these roles if elected "but without the added responsibility of any general admin duties such as meeting attendances etc."
