Leahy frustrated with Camogie law makers

The ongoing clash of fixtures between the Camogie Association and the Ladies Gaelic Football Association has been raised again this week with Meath senior footballer All-star nominee and Navan O'Mahonys camogie player Aoibheann Leahy voicing her issue.

Leahy expressed her concerns that her club will face into a Senior Camogie relegation play-off, instead of a Senior B semi-final because of a clash of fixtures earlier in the year which led to O'Mahonys losing points for not fulfilling a fixture.

Leahy's concerns are hot on the heels of frustrations raised by another of Meath's Ladies All-star nominees, Niamh O'Sullivan, who vented her frustration at having to play a Ladies SFC semi-final and a Junior Camogie final on the same day in October.

Such issues aren't confined to club level as earlier this year Megan Thynne had to leave Meath's NFL Div 2 semi-final against Cavan in Breffni Park at half-time to rush to Inishkeen to play in the second-half of Meath's National Camogie League semi-final against Antrim.

Leahy's concerns are:

"Fairness, equality, player welfare - BLA BLA BLA…none of that seems to matter when it comes to a club camogie championship in Co Meath," tweeted Leahy.

"How a Meath Camogie Board allow a team who has won no games to advance to a Senior B County semi final is baffling and team who had won a game, fighting relegation.

"Navan O’Mahonys were penalised (-2 points) for not fulfilling a fixture (on/or before 10th Oct) The club stood by dual players, honouring the camogie core values and respecting player welfare of those playing a fixed club football game that day.

"O’Mahonys had previously suggested five different dates well in advance of that 'on or before' date. All were rejected by the opposition. County Board suggested one later date and was unaccepted by opposing team.

"Therefore, the County Board decided that O’Mahonys would forfeit and be penalised. This is a major issue. We are being asked to accept that it was unjust and unfortunate on club camogie players.

"Denied a chance to play in the Senior B county camogie semi-finals this weekend at the hands of a County Board who seem to disregard player welfare.

"As Meath club camogie players, where do we go from here?

"The Meath Camogie Board seem to be sympathetic and recognise the unfairness now, once the semi-finals have been fixed. What good is supposed sympathy and promises for 2022 and onwards when something could be done now?," concluded the O'Mahonys player.

We have contacted Meath Camogie Board for a response, but have yet to receive a reply.
