Meath Garda Youth Awards

Special Merit Award - Joseph Colmey and Tadgh Lynch

Joseph Colmey and Tadgh Lynch are 16 years old. Joseph is living in Slane and Tadgh is living in Donore. Both boys attend St Mary's Secondary School in Drogheda.

Joseph and Tadgh share a story of valour and humility.

Tadgh is an avid sportsman. He plays golf and GAA, but his talent lies in Rugby. He dedicates much of his time training and playing for Boyne Rugby Club. Tadgh is known as a focused, determined and unassuming young man.

Joseph was playing Gaelic for Meath and training vigorously when two years ago he was diagnosed with Pars Defect. This left Joseph with severe back pain, despite his pain he rarely missed school and made every effort to play for his team. In August 2021, Joseph underwent a spinal fusion surgery.

In June, the boys were enjoying the hot spell at local swimming site on the beautiful river Boyne in Slane. Both boys are competent swimmers. They noticed a young boy, in great difficulty in the water. The boys mother was frantic. The child appeared to be drowning.

Joe and Tadgh rushed to the boys aid and brought him safely to the shore. An ambulance was called and the young boy was taken to hospital, he thankfully made a full recovery.

The details of this incident where never mentioned by Joe and Tadgh. In fact, their parents were only made aware of their bravery, by a resident of Slane who happened to see the courageous act.

When the boys were notified of their nomination, they were humbled and made sure to mention other young people that helped on the day.

The boys were nominated by their families, who hoped they would be acknowledged for their modesty, bravery and courage.

The Meath Garda Youth Awards, sponsored by Centra, recognise the very positive contribution young people make in their communities and are about shining a light on their good works.
