€3million in funding pledged for upgrade of Navan roads

Almost €3million is to be spent on refurbishing and improving local roads in the Navan electoral area over the nest three years.

The Council unveiled the draft three year roads programme for the electoral area at a meeting of last week's Municipal Council.

The programme is expected to be confirmed by a full meeting of the Council next month.

The programme proposes to spend €947,800 each year for the next three years.

The works proposed for next year include €195,000 to be spent at Retaine and €175,000 at Shambo, as well as €145,000 on the Commons Road.

Other works next year will include the Boyne Road, Curraghstown, Dunderry village, Circular Road and the Dan Shaw Road.

In 2023, the Council proposes to spend €200,000 on Moathill, €195,000 in Johnstown and €185,000 on Cairn Hill. Other works will include Robinstown, Black Road and Irishtown.

The programme for 2024 include a €228,000 spend at Gainstown, €215,000 on Trim Road and €175,000 at Proudstown, as well as works at Ardbraccan, Tankardstown and Athlumney Lane.

Cllr Eddie Fennessy welcomed the executive's proposed three year roads programme. “€2,843,400 is a decent investment in local infrastructure, when coupled with the €150,000 road maintenance spend on housing estates over the same time period, the overall investment is just shy of €3 million.

“Many urban and rural communities will benefit for this spend and I fully support it.

"I thank Council, in particular, for the €165,000 investment in Robinstown village. I've worked with residents there for a number of months. They have genuine traffic safety concerns and will be delighted with this announcement.

"I'd also like to thank council for investing €458,000 on projects at the Commons Road and two others nearby in Gainstown. Roads in and around that area are in a fairly poor state. Numerous local residents and indeed drivers from the Navan Town Bus Service have raised serious concerns with me for their safety and for the condition of their vehicles.

“They too will be delighted with Council's announcement.”

Cllr Yemi Adenuga welcomed the allocation of of €175,000 for works at Shambo, pointing out that she had pushed repeatedly to get the road included in the programme.

“I am happy to see the road will be completely resurfaced.

“Thanks to the transport section of Meath County Council for this and thanks to residents of Bellewstown who have engaged with me on this over the last few months,” she said.
