Black Bush fundraiser a big success

Black Bush Golf Club hosted the popular and successful annual inter-county competition in support of the Gary Kelly Cancer Support Centre on Sunday 5th September

County flags lined the driveway to the clubhouse which added to the atmosphere and on this occasion there was a merited victory for the Kerry team that comprised Billy Dillon, Sean Griffin, John Sheehy and Dan O'Sullivan.

"Black Bush Golf Club is always proud to host this annual competition for the Gary Kelly Cancer support Centre in Drogheda," commented competition PRO Louise Purcell.

"Club members and visitors always give overwhelming support through competition entry fees, donations, raffle entries, attendance at the post competition event and auction bidding.

"This year, players came from all over the country with some 48 teams participating in the competition.

"In the end, it was a Kerry team that won with a previous victory three years ago, the winning team comprised club members Billy Dillon, Sean Griffin, John Sheehy and Dan O’Sullivan.

"Continuing the recent success of women in sport, Leona Maguire is an honorary member of Black Bush, a non-county ladies team won the overall highest score with 97 points, Clare Coughlan, Nuala Doyle, Martina Toher and Jennifer Ree," she added.

The event raised around €9,000, but due to Covid restrictions, events such as the usual well attended auction and prize giving was scaled back.

Organiser Gerry Flanagan said he looked forward to organising next year’s event which would hopefully revert back to a full schedule of the auction, raffles, prizegiving and organised function at the end of the day.

Ann Treacy from the Gary Kelly Cancer Support Centre said that since the Covid pandemic, the Centre continues to experience difficulties to deliver full services.

“Fundraisers such as this event provide much-needed funds for the Centre which assist with the financing of the cost of therapists and overheads at the centre” she said.

"Unfortunately, so many people have cancer or know someone who has, but thankfully through research and new medical developments, outcomes have become much more positive.

"Our services are needed now more than ever to help people through difficult times and I commend Black Bush Golf Club, the organisers and all the supporters of this annual event," she concluded.
