Dereliction on Flower Hill, Navan.

Regeneration plans for Flowerhill and Abbeylands goes on public display

Deadline for submissions is 24th September

Meath County Council has published its draft urban design plan for the Flowerhill and Abbeylands areas of Navan.

‘Flowerhill – A vibrant town centre community, proud of its past and confident of its future' has been drawn up in conjunction with Paul Hogarth Company Consultants.

In 2018, Damien English, the then Minister of State at the Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government announced that three major urban regeneration projects in Navan would be funded to the tune of €3.7 million by his department, including the renegeration of Flowerhill. This allowed the Council acquire derelict properties in the area, and was followed by a further cash injection of €7.6 million by the present government.

Meath County Council chief executive, Jackie Maguire, says that Flowerhill is an important part of the town.

"It has long been home to generations of families, many of whom were traditionally employed in the nearby mills and other businesses," she says.

"Yet people will also have noticed that in recent years, Flowerhill has experienced a period of decline, evident by the number of vacant buildings in the area. This document marks the determination of Meath County Council and local communities to arrest this decline, and to shape a brighter future for Flowerhill and the adjacent Abbeylands.

Not only is this ambition vital for local residents and businesses, but it also plays a key part in our wider objectives for Navan town, which in line with national policy, encourage more people to live and work within walking distance of the town centre and its amenities.

She says the plan was produced in partnership with local residents, business owners, local schools and everyone else who took time to participate.

"I would urge everyone with an interest in Flowerhill and Abbeylands to join us on the journey set out in this plan. By working together to implement its proposals I am confident that we can realise the vision of a “vibrant town centre community, proud of its past and confident of its future”.
