North East u-20 ladies rugby team on the radar

Female rugby players aged between 18 and 20 are invited to take part in trials for a North East selection.

The number of girls playing rugby has increased across Leinster in the last few years and particularly in the north east where forward-thinking clubs like Navan, North Meath, Ardee, Dundalk, Skerries, Ashbourne and Balbriggan have consistently fielded teams from mini to youth grades.

Despite the problems associated with Covid-19 restrictions, Boyne RFC has revived the girls section and Leinster’s newest club, Carlingford has just started developing a team for girls.

Ardee RFC is another up and coming girls club with a strong u-16 team.

This latest initiative for a North East Regional selection will further boost the development and standard of the game.

The first in a series of trials for the North East Region team will take place at Balbriggan RFC from 7.30pm - 9pm on Friday 10th September.

For eligibility purposes players must be born after 1st July 2001

Following on from the trials it is the intention to select a panel of players to participate in a competitive league against other Leinster under-20 regional teams.

This also provides an opportunity to bridge the gap between youth and senior rugby with the new Leinster North East under-20 Women's Rugby team

Coaching will be from Jeff Neville and Michelle Claffey who are committed to developing excellent future senior players for the North East region, Leinster and Ireland.

Further details available from local clubs in the first instance.
