Headfort quartet take top prize

GOLF Intense competition at popular event

There was an entry of close to 50 teams for the Headfort Golf Club annual invitational on Friday which was sponsored by Sheridan Insurances.

The top prize was an overnight stay, dinner and a fourball at Slieve Russell and the Headfort quartet of Alf Martyn, Liam Hyland, John Martin and Fintan Hogan took the laurels narrowly from the team of Aidan Foley (Headfort), Susan Morrison (Lahinch), Niall Morrison (Lahinch) and Eddie Mitchell (Headfort).

Headfort lady captain Mary McQuillan won the category prize for nearest the pin.

The format was a champagne scramble, which provided the golfers with an opportunity to enjoy golf with a fun element as men's, ladies and mixed teams tackled the challenges that the pristine Headfort fairways and greens provide.

"Headfort Golf Club would like to express its thanks to Sheridan Insurances, generous sponsors of the annual event and we are very grateful to our other two key sponsors, Rooney’s Homevalue and O’Brien’s SuperValu, Kells and a large number of local businesses who continue to generously support the event," commented competition co-ordinator Paul Gilbert.

"The advent of the Covid epidemic and the subsequent disruption to sport did not allow the invitational to take place in 2020.

"However, golf has been fortunate to be one of the sports which has been able to continue, thanks to its outdoor nature and the ability of participants to follow social distancing rules.

"Apart from competitions like this, we are all looking forward to welcoming the Irish Amateur Close Championship to Headfort form 12th -17th August 2022, that will be a great occasion for the club," concluded the Headfort Golf Club official.
