Athboy win opener in Malahide

Inspired by an outstanding display by Simon Deevy, who scored three tries and provided two assists, Athboy Fighting Irish powered their way to an emphatic 50-32 victory over Malahide in the Rugby League Ireland Div 1 encounter at Malahide.

Deevy capped his man-of-the-match performance with three tries and two assists as Athboy Fighting Irish kick-started their campaign in fine style.

Nathan Kiernan got Athboy up and running with a super try after just three minutes. Deevy smashed through for his opening try soon after while Rory Woods made the most of a pinpoint kick to the corner from Conor Hayes to score a wonderful touchdown.

Two of those tries were converted.

However, Maladide also worked their way through for a number of tries.

The home side led 16-14 at the break and they extended their lead early in the second-half with a try and conversion.

In the second-half Athboy really turned on the style and power with Deevy getting two more tries to complete his hat-trick.

Eoin King also powered over while Niall Finegan ran in for two tries with Dennis Cannon adding another touchdown for Athboy who dominated the closing stages.

All Athboy's second-half tries were converted.

Kiernan, King, Zach Campbell and Deevy were outstanding for the winners.

Next up for Athboy is a home tie against Dublin City Exiles on Saturday 3rd July.

"A great game to watch in Malahide who were great hosts," added Athboy's Jordan Herring.
