New road to be named after murdered postmaster

The new road connecting the Kentstown Road to Farganstown in Navan is to be named after a postmaster murdered in the town in 1921.

The protocol committee of Meath County Council recommended, and it was agreed by the full council this week, that the road from the intersection of the R153 Kenstown Road and Metges Road to Farganstown should carry the name Thomas Hodgett Road (Bothar Hodgett) in his memory. The road is due to be officially opened this year.

Mr Hodgett, the postmaster in Navan, was taken from his home in Academy Street, Navan on Thursday 17th February 1921 by an RIC party believed to be from Bailieboro.

He was shot in the chest and thrown into the Blackwater river at Poolboy Bridge. His body was recovered some five weeks later.

His killers were never bought to justice.
