Clancy's men put up brave effort against champions

There was a minute's silence before tonight's League of Ireland Premier Div encounter between Drogheda Utd and Shamrock Rovers at Head in the Game Park, Drogheda to remember Margaret (Peggy) Clancy who passed away in recent days.

Peggy's son, Drogheda Utd boss Timmy Clancy, was in the dugout for the game.

His team put up a battling performance before losing out to a last-gasp goal from Shamrock Rovers' the reigning champions.

Goal came when Rovers won a free out on the right the ball was floated to the far post and Danny Mandroiu headed home from close range deep into injury time.

The Drogheda Utd team included Luke Heeney from Bellewstown who started the game while another Royal County player, Brandon Birmingham came on as a second-half substitute.

Chris McCann who lives in Ashbourne also came on in the second-half for Shamrock Rovers who eventually wore the young, home side down.

Despite the lack of goals this was an enteraining encounter with Mark Doyle a real threat for the home side. Doyle had a half-chance for Drogheda with a shot in the opening half after a surging run but Rovers created most of the chances.

Rovers sent on Irish international Graham Burke and he had a massive influence in turning the game in his team's favour.

Dylan Watts had a shot scream inches wide for Rovers before Stephen Bradley's side struck with their last-gasp winner.
