Drogheda ahead of local rivals Dundalk as season hots up

Trim man Timmy Clancy has cause to reflect on a promising start to the 2021 League of Ireland Premier Div campaign for his young Drogheda Utd side.

His team currently sit in sixth place in the table after picking up four points from three games played.

It's an encouraging start for Clancy and his team who are ahead of local rivals Dundalk - and who would have forseen that before the campaign kicked off? Ok there is still a very long way to go but still something substantial for Clancy to build on.

Last night Clancy's side showed real resilience and character by digging out a 1-1 draw with high-flying Finn Harps in Head in the Game Park, Drogheda.

The Donegal side took the lead in the second-half through a rocket of an effort from Karl O'Sullivan.

Clancy freshened things up by sending on Darragh Markey and he was involved in creating an equaliser for the home team scored by Mark Doyle. Drogheda dominated the closing stages but just couldn't get a winner.

Meath player Luke Heeney made his appearance for Drogheda as a substitute. Other players from the Royal County, Brandon Birmingham and James Clarke were unused subs.

Out of their three games played so far Drogheda have won one, lost one and drawn one. Dundalk languish in eighth place with just one point from three played.

Finn Harps are among the leaders in the Premier Div, along with Sligo Rovers and St Patrick's Athletic, who are on the same number of points.

On Friday night Dundalk with Gormanston's Greg Sloggett appearing as an early substitute, lost 1-2 to Shamrock Rovers.

Also last night Bohemians, featuring Meath players James Finnerty and Dawson Devoy, lost 0-1 to St Patrick's Athletic.

In Div 1 Drumbaragh's Jimmy Corcoran started for Wexford Youths but they lost 0-1 to Treaty Utd.
