Devin Toner in the North Kildare colours.

Toner urges young players to enjoy their rugby

North Kildare RFC have extended their congratulations to Devin Toner on his achievement in winning his 262nd Leinster cap.

Toner played his part in helping Leinster defeat Munster 16-6 in the PRO 14 final at the RDS yesterday and by so doing broke the appearance record previously held by Gordon D'Arcy.

Toner started his rugby career in North Kildare u-10s and then went to Castleknock College - and from there went on to greater things.

The big lock forward recently told Sinead Griffin, the chairperson of the Junior section at North Kildare RFC, what it means to him to have played for the club.

“My father brought myself and brother Darragh to play in NKRFC when I was eight. I started playing on the u-10s. I was scared and anxious at first because I didn’t know if I would like it because I had only played Gaelic and hurling up to that stage," he recalled.

"I quickly began to love it because of all the friends I had made. We weren’t necessarily very good but really enjoyed the training and the games but most of all making friends, some of those who I’m still friendly with today. The coaches were fantastic and very encouraging.

"One of my best memories was of going to a blitz in Coleraine where I actually played against Andrew Trimble.

"If anyone was to ask me for advice about playing in North Kildare, I would say to just enjoy it as much as you can. Don’t take it too seriously but give it your all and it will benefit you for the rest of your life.”

A spokesperson for North Kildare added: "This is the environment we are still trying to encourage in North Kildare RFC today. We congratulate Devin on winning his 262nd cap and wish him the best for the rest of his rugby career."

North Kildare RFC is based between Maynooth and Kilcock at The Maws. The club caters for boys, girls and senior men’s teams with a new Adapted Tag team. The club is always looking for new players.
