Anger at destruction of Blackcastle trees

An investigation is underway into the felling of mature trees at Blackcastle Avenue in the centre of Navan.

There has been a furious reaction to the destruction of a number of mature trees on the spectacular tree- lined avenue on the banks of the Boyne at Blackcastle.

An investigation is underway by Meath County Council and the Gardai have been informed.

Cllr Eddie Fennessy has urged the council “to Meath act without delay before the area is damaged irreparably."

"Ancient trees, vegetation and wildlife have been completely destroyed. The avenue is a Special Area of Conservation.

“There is no justification for this destruction at all.

"Numerous constituents contacted me over the past few days to raise concerns about the tree felling.

“Pictures and videos were sent showing the utter devastation wrought on the area”.

The trees in question are identified in the Meath County Development plan as “Trees to be Preserved.”

The plan states “the most notable group of trees or woodlands in Navan are to be found along the riparian corridor of the River Boyne, and particularly within the curtilage of Blackcastle House.”

It is the council's policy “to retain trees and hedgerows of value as illustrated on the relevant map forming part of this development plan.”

“It is also council policy “to have a presumption in favour of the retention of existing trees and their incorporation into any new development unless this can be shown to be impractical, and to protect, preserve and ensure effective management of trees and groups of trees considered to be of special amenity value.”

A spokesperson for Meath County Council said that as the issue is 'live' they would not be commenting.
