Shock and disgust over desecration of graves in Kentstown churchyard

A Kentstown resident said he was 'shocked and disgusted' to discover that gravestones in a local church had been desecrated by vandals.

Vandals used spraypaint to tag headstones with graffiti at St Mary’s Church of Ireland in Kentstown.

Chairperson of the local Tidy Town’s group said a member of the congregation made the grim discovery earlier this week. Speaking on what she witnessed when he visited the scene he commented that:

"I went for a walk around midday yesterday and I saw graffiti all over the churchyard.

"I was disgusted that someone would go into a graveyard and desecrate anyone’s grave.

"There is shock in the locality for the fact that it is a graveyard more than anything else. People are really stunned.

"The mind set someone would have to have to do that is hard to imagine.

"It must have happened on either Saturday or Sunday night. I went down there on Saturday lunchtime to do some hedge cutting and it wasn't done then.

"I'd urge parents to be aware of where their young people are and what they are getting up to."
