Referee Graham Kelly issues a red card to Waterford assistant-manager Mike Newell this evening in the game against Drogheda.

Winning start for Tim Clancy and Drogheda

Tim Clancy saw his Drogheda Utd side get their League of Ireland Premier Division campaign off to a winning start this evening with a late winner against Waterford.

There were a number of firsts - it was Clancy's first game as manager of the club in the Premier grade after he guided the Louth side to the First Division title last season.

It also saw the first own goal of the season when Cameron Evans (Waterford) deflected a James Brown centre in the 89th minute to his own net.

The game also marked the managerial debut of former Republic of Ireland midfielder Kevin Sheedy in the managerial seat at the Munster club.

Sheedy has as his assistant Mike Newell (a winner in the Premier League with Blackburn Rovers).

Newell picked up the first red card of the season when he was sent from the sideline late in the second-half by referee Graham Kelly following a verbal exchange with a player.

Next up for Drogheda is a trip to play St Patrick's Ath next Saturday.
