Basketball development officer appointed for Meath

Basketball Ireland has announced the appointment of Andrew McGeever as the new Community Development Officer for Meath.

Andrew will take up his new position on Thursday 1st April in a major boost for the sport in the county, which already boasts established clubs such as Navan Cougars, Dunshaughlin Rockets and Bettystown-based East Coast Cavaliers.

McGeever is currently part of the Ireland u-18 men’s coaching staff, working under Paul Kelleher, having joined the team this year.

He has also been involved in coaching at Basketball Ireland National Camps for the last four years.

McGeever’s playing career has seen him represent Letterkenny Blaze and St. Vincent’s at under-age level, while playing in the Men’s Super League for Pyrobel Killester between 2016 and 2019.

Most recently he played National League with LYIT Donegal, before his switch to IT Carlow Basketball, where he is completing his MSc in Sports Performance Analysis at IT Carlow.

He previously graduated from DCU with a BSc Sport Science and Health.

"I am excited to be joining the team of Development Officers working to grow our sport across the country. I can't wait to help progress the game in Meath and look forward to when we can all get back to playing the sport we love," he commented.

The new Meath Community Development Officer role is a collaboration between Basketball Ireland and Meath County Council and is also backed by the Meath Local Sports Partnership.

Meath Local Sports Partnership co-ordinator Mary Murphy said: “Meath County Council and Meath Local Sports Partnership very much welcome the appointment of Andrew McGeever to the jointly-funded role of Sports Development Officer for Basketball in Meath.

"We look forward to working with Andrew in his remit of developing the sport of basketball to all ages and abilities within Meath. We wish him every success in his new role,” she added.

Basketball Ireland Head of Development, Ciaran O’Sullivan, welcomed the appointment also: “We are really pleased to have recruited Andrew to help us engage further with the local community in Meath.

"Andrew has been involved in the game for a long time, both as a player and coach and will bring huge enthusiasm to the role.

"I’d like to thank Meath County Council and the Meath Local Sports Partnership for their support in helping bring this appointment to fruition.”

Basketball Ireland chairman Paul McDevitt, added: “Andrew brings a wealth of basketball experience, while being accomplished academically too and is a strong addition to our team of Development Officers.

"We have also recruited Erin Bracken as our new Community Development Officer for South Dublin County Council, so it further demonstrates Basketball Ireland’s eagerness to increase its reach into communities and grow the game.”
