'Covid-19' by Lily O’Brien (age 12)

We heard it all on March 13th, the soon to be-dreadful news,

Schools would shut for 2 weeks on, we all sung our big woohoo!

We said our goodbye, skipped our way home, ran out the doors of the school,

Fear bubbled, smiles faded until there were only but a few.

On the news, and everywhere near, we were told “only till April!”

I found myself on my birthday, no friends around my table.

I hope for this illness to end, before the summer I wished,

But there I was in summer, as the dreadful illness hissed.

I enjoyed the tranquillity, the peaceful times, we were always so creative,

But you can only be with your siblings for so long before you grow some hatred.

Going to the shops, out in public, the distancing was really weird,

As we wore them out more and more that weird feeling disappeared.

The two metres became easier, we kept it in our heads,

We all wore our masks properly, without it being said.

We stayed away from one another, we thought it would end this dread,

But some lunatics couldn’t stay inside, now more and more are dead!

During autumn it all died down, enjoying the warmth of our houses,

As the days grew colder and the nights hissed, we put away our summer blouses.

Back into school, here we are, not one kid wanted that announcement,

We all wished to be home, snuggled up, laying on our couches.

Winter came, as cold as ever, we’re all sick of it now.

“Restrictions are lifted for Christmas!” they said, we all pondered, how?

We all turned head and asked questions, “how is this allowed?!”

The more and more cases arise, we gave a very sarcastic “wow”.

Look where we are, 11 months on! It’s getting repetitive.

Just like our moods, opposite to Covid tests, we’re feeling very negative.

We see our family less and less, I want to see my relatives,

At least we are saving the lives of the vulnerable and the delicate.

So here I say “get out the way! We’re done with your games!”

We need to hold people accountable and give them the blame!

Now here we are, here back to claim,

“Ourselves and our lives!” We all exclaim!
