€5.7m fund for age-friendly and social housing projects

Funding of €5.7 million has been approved for age-friendly and social housing projects in Athboy.

Meath County Council has received this funding to develop housing projects on the Kildalkey Road and Connaught Street in Athboy.

Cllr Mike Bray welcomed the news and said: “This funding approval is a significant investment for the town of Athboy and will be of great benefit to those in need of housing in the locality.

“€2,067,750 will be spent on developing age-friendly housing on part of the Old Convent site on the Kildalkey road in Athboy and a design team has been appointed to begin this project.

“The project will focus on suitable age-friendly housing for older people.

"The site is an ideal location for age-friendly housing as it is right beside the town centre near to the church, the Athboy Convent Community Centre, the health centre, and other important amenities.

“It is planned to develop 10 bungalows on the Kildalkey road site with a completion date of early 2023 if all goes to plan.

“There is also a further €2,067,750 provisionally approved to a second phase of housing at the Old Convent site which will be examined following the allocation of the first phase.

“This location is a particularly significant project as over the next number of years, we could see, in total, €4,135,500 being spent on developing much needed age-friendly housing at this ideally located town centre site in Athboy."

The council has also been awarded €1,598,475 for a turnkey project on Connaught Street.

“This is welcome as it will see the delivery of seven more social housing units for Athboy.

“This development is also part of the council’s aim to regenerate Connaught Street and tackle the issue of dereliction in this part of Athboy.

“In recent months over €5.7 million has been approved for age-friendly and social housing projects in Athboy.

“Meath County Council and Minister Darragh O’Brien’s department have to be commended for their commitment to advancing such important housing projects for our area,” concluded Cllr Bray.
