Hotel vision for old Eureka school

The old Eureka school and grounds on the outskirts of Kells would make an ideal site for a new hotel in the future, a meeting of Meath County Council was told.

The area is zoned for “community” use at the moment but four councillors Sean Drew, Mike Bray, Paul McCabe and Eugene Cassidy sought to have it rezoned to “tourism” usage. Eureka school has moved to a new school on the Cavan Road in the town.

It was claimed that the community zoning was no longer required on the site. The D1 (community) zoning tag would help enhance the site for tourism purposes, especially since it was on a prime site on the Navan entrance to Kells. Cllr Sarah Reilly (FG) was against changing the zoning.

The council executive had recommended that there be no change to the G1 zoning. The four sponsors of the motion to change withdrew it and the matter will now be left for discussion when the Kells local area plan is discussed.
