Tommy Tiernan: 'I have never brought my kids to Navan because there is nothing to do'
Tommy Tiernan has revealed he has never brought his kids back to visit his home place of Navan because “there is nothing to do there".
The comedian made the comments on 'The Tommy & Hector Podcast with Laura Blewitt' and was blasted by fellow Navan native Hector O'hEochagain, who spoke of the importance of own his children understanding their heritage.
As Hector was remembering a recent trip he made to Navan with his family, Tommy, who lives in Galway, admitted that while he loved going back to do gigs in the town, his children had never been to the place he grew up in and which has provided a wealth of material for his shows throughout the years.
He said: “I have never brought my children to Navan because any time I think of bringing them there, I think there is nothing to do.
“When we go say out to the island, the kids love it there and we arrive and go to the little house and the kids have freedom.
“My 13-year-old was out past midnight wandering around the island in the pitch blackness with her friend.”
Tommy went on to speak of his memories of family trips to Athlone and Clonmel when he was young and admitted that he "didn’t have a sense of his own kids having that freedom in Navan".
A horrified Hector hit back: “Tommy you need to bring them back to their roots.
“They need to go back and do a lap of the shopping centre.
“Do they understand the significance of Navan in their father’s life, do they know that Navan was the font of stories for their father’s success?
“You have to being them back to the home place and keep the link of Meathness in you Tommy.”
Hector spoke of the importance in instilling the significance of the town where he grew up in his own children saying:
“I want them to feel Navan, I want them to smell Navan, I want them to hear the Navan accent.”
"Shane, the smallest lad, said to me the other day, 'dad are we going to Navan?'; I said 'yeah' and he said 'did we book the China Garden?'.
"We always go to the China Garden one night, it’s a brilliant restaurant.
"Then we go to Ezios, the chipper, another night.
"We are going to bring the boys to the Hill of Tara and celebrate the Meathness in them."
