Early Newman goal a major boost for Kilmainham

Mickey Newman's goal inside a minute helped Kilmainham to a 2-11 to 0-15 IFC first round win against Dunderry at Sean Newman Park on Saturday.

Newman and Conor Kilgallen quickly added points before Dunderry replied with three Stephen Coogan points (two frees).

Good scores from Conor Farrell and Simon Carty and a Coogan brace kept Dunderry in contention.

Dylan Morgan and Newman added two more points apiece for Kilmainham who were lucky to go in with a 1-6 to 0-8 interval lead thanks to good defending from Seanie Mahon that forced a Dunderry wide just before half-time.

Luke Martyn had Dunderry level after the resumption, but Kilmainham responded swiftly with a Dylan Morgan goal and he also added a point from a mark.

Kilmainham lost full back Harry Newman to a black card as a Conor Farrell fisted point and a Coogan free tightened things up, before Morgan pointed again for Kilmainham.

Dunderry also lost a player to a black card (a defender) and Dunderry substitute Jordan Martyn claimed a nice point midway through the second hal.

Coogan converted four more frees for Dunderry with Newman (two), Larry Morgan and Dylan Morgan countering for Kilmainham.
