Major crackdown on intoxicated driving

Gardai are launching a major crackdown on drink and drug driving over the Bank Holiday weekend.

Meath Roads Policing Inspector, Peter Gilsenan warned there will be checkpoints across the county targeting intoxicated drivers.

“So far this year, five people have lost their lives on Meath roads, up from three in the same period last year.

“This is a worrying trend, particularly as this period included two months on lockdown.

“We will be carrying out operations across the division at different locations to target intoxicated drivers and those under the influence.

“The key message this weekend is, if you drink or take drugs, don't drive.”

Inspector Gilsenan said that to date this year, 13 people in Meath have been arrested for driving while under the influence of drugs.

“Again this is a worrying trend, when you consider that there was a long lockdown period.”

He said that as well as recreational drugs, such as cannabis, cocaine or heroin, drivers should also be aware that some prescription medicines affect driving and you should consult your doctor about your medications.

“Driving while under the influence is a selfish action, as it endangers all road users.”

While the emphasis this holiday weekend will be on intoxicated driving Gardai will also be alert for those speeding, driving while using mobile phones or not wearing seat belts.

He also urged those driving long distances to stop and take a break if they feel tired.

Pull into an official lay-by or a filling station, have a cup of coffee and a break,” he advised.
