Traffic congestion in Johnstown needs to be dealt with - Fennessy

A CALL for the installation of a yellow box at the entrance to the Athlumney Wood estate in Navan, has been made by Cllr Edward Fennessy.

At a recent meeting of Navan Municipal Council he said; "I was approached by residents from the Athlumney Wood estate recently who asked if measures could be put in place at the entrance to the estate to alleviate access and exit problems caused by school traffic congestion during peak times.”

He welcomed the council's commitment to assess the situation and provide additional road markings if required.

“Congestion problems as far back as Athlumney Wood form part of the wider problem of traffic management around the St Stephens NS and Colaiste na Mí school campus"

"At present there are 1,800 students attending school there. When redeveloped through the construction of a new secondary school and the new St Mary's special school, the student body is expected to increase to 2,300 students, bringing with it further pressure on existing infrastructure such as roads"

"I've highlighted congestion problems at the school numerous times over the past two years."

“The council informed me that the through road at the newly developed Dunville estate will serve as a relief road and direct traffic away from the campus.

We need to ensure that road is operational when schools return in September,” he said.
