Towns Cup test for Navan - last win was in 2008 (see the pix)

Navan's second team will face Longford in the first round of the Provincial Towns' Cup at Balreask Old on Sunday.

Leinster League Div 1B side Longford will arrive in Navan with a big reputation and will be anticipating victory against the Balreask Old side.

While Navan won the prestigious trophy on 10 occasions, the last time was in 2008 against Tullow and that was before promotion to the All Ireland League was achieved in 2009.

Since then Navan has not had a good run in this competition as the seconds or J1 team has to play against the first team of Leinster League clubs that don’t play in the AIL.

The Navan J1 team competes in the Metro League Div 3 against second and third teams from the Dublin clubs such as St Mary’s, Wanderers, Terenure and Old Belvedere.

Navan had a good win on Saturday in the Metro League when they defeated St Mary's by 39 points (44-5) and that will boost confidence ahead of the visit of Longford.

Fergal McGuirk heads up the coaching team of the J1’s for the last two seasons. This year he is assisted by Christy Moffat as his forwards coach and team captain Tommy Geraghty.

It is the first time in a long time that Navan has had a home fixture and the club is appealing to all supporters to get out to Balreask Old on Sunday, 3pm.
