Feast of local theatre this weekend

This weekend sees a feast of local theatre, with drama groups across the county taking to the stage.

Last night saw the opening in Wilkinstown of the of Yellow River Drama Group's production of the Martin McDonagh classic ‘The Beauty Queen of Leenane’ .

Set in the mountains of Connemara, County Galway, the play tells the darkly comic tale of Maureen Folan (Sharon Carroll), a plain, lonely woman in her early forties, and Mag (Marian McMahon), her manipulative, aging mother, whose interference in Maureen’s first and possibly final chance of a loving relationship with returned emmigrant Pato (Andy Reilly) sets in motion a train of events that are as tragically funny as they are horrific and lead the play to its terrifying end.
In a world of Kimberley biscuits, lumpy Complan, Australian soap operas and emigration, the play reveals a viciousness and urgency behind the clichéd, more romantic and quaint views of Irishness in a cruelly humourous way.
Newcomer Keith O’Brien plays the part of Ray Dooley, the younger brother of Pato, and the he play is directed by Nigel Ryan.
